The Tarrytown neighborhood is generally considered Austin's most prestigious area. Beautiful and gracious homes interspersed with Tarrytown apartments and condos mean there's room for nearly everyone in this central Austin neighborhood.

The atmosphere of Tarrytown is one of placidity and old money. This mood was shaken up when animal rights activist Jeanne Daniels, a Houston resident, inherited the Tarrytown Shopping Center and shut down businesses there that served meat or sold leather or fur. Tarrytown apartment and house residents found some of their favorite stores and cafes were moving or closing; for example, the former Holiday House cafe in the Center is now the vegetarian Nu Age Cafe.

Meat lovers can still eat at Zoot, a converted home on Hearn Street north of Lake Austin Boulevard with a five-star menu. Magnolia Cafe on Lake Austin Boulevard, a Tarrytown neighborhood tradition, is open for sandwiches and breakfast 24 hours a day. Another tradition is Mozart's Coffee Roasters, serving coffee and pastries on a large deck overlooking the lake.

Few businesses occupy the neighborhood, but there’s easy access to downtown from any apartment in Tarrytown. Lack of business is made up for by the beauty of the turn-of-the-century and older architecture of Tarrytown apartments, houses and churches. The residential areas are broken up with serene parks.

On the west side of Lake Austin, the Mayfield Preserve is a 22-acre park created around 1900. It's partly a nature and wildlife preserve and partly a formal park with planned gardens, lily ponds, deer and peacocks. The preserve is next to Laguna Gloria, a 1915 Mediterranean-style villa that now holds part of the collection of the Austin Museum of Art, which is a draw for Tarrytown apartment dwellers and house owners alike. Other parks include Reed Park in central Tarrytown, Lions Municipal Golf Course in southern Tarrytown and Eilers Park with the Deep Eddy Pool.
