The Hyde Park neighborhood is Austin's answer to what "neighborhood" really means. The Victorian architecture of Hyde Park's apartments and homes and the towering shade trees give everyone a front porch to sit on.

This Austin neighborhood was designed in the 1890s by businessman Martin Shipe, who planned homes that would appeal to large working-class families and quaint bungalows for couples. Many Hyde Park apartments are in these older buildings, although some small apartment buildings have been built with architecture that keeps to the tradition of this village-like neighborhood, and a building code keeps other types of buildings to the same style too.

Hyde Park apartments and bungalows draw the faculty and students of nearby University of Texas Austin, as well as young professionals who work in the downtown area. Young families also find the neighborhood apartments and homes appealing. It's an easy walk to both campus and downtown, or residents can choose the campus shuttle or regular city bus services.

Although Hyde Park is a populated Austin neighborhood, it has kept its sense of community for over 100 years. Its center is 43rd and Duval, where residents can get coffee and a sandwich or sweet treat at Quack's Bakery or grappa and gelatto at Dolce Vita. Some of the other area cafes include Flightpath, the Hyde Park Bar and Grill, Asti, an Italian restaurant, and Mother's for vegetarian cuisine. Most customers are neighborhood residents, not tourists.

The neighborhood includes businesses like a dry cleaner, a no-contract gym and a Fresh Plus grocery store. The eastern edge of Hyde Park is a larger shopping area with some chain stores. Shipe Park, in the heart of Hyde Park, has a swimming pool, wide open green spaces, a children's playground, and a basketball court. The nine-hole Hyde Park Golf Course is one of the oldest courses in Texas. Businesses and green spaces alike keep Hyde Park a village in a big city.
